Caring for Giants

Hiya Pals! We are just home from another amazing Disney trip! One of the best parts of a Disney World vacation is doing new things each trip. Coincidentally, we had a Disney first for us this trip with a special tour: Caring for Giants.

What is Caring for Giants?

Caring for Giants is a backstage Animal Kingdom tour where you get to see the African elephants from Kilimanjaro Safari up close. The elephants can be seen from an 80-100 ft distance. We were so close that our guide told us we weren’t allowed to call their names because they would be able to hear us and would respond to their names if we called them. Obviously, we were pretty close to these majestic creatures. Our guide Erin took us backstage where we walked to a bus to be taken to the viewing platform. She pointed out the backstage barns for several different animals along the way and once on the platform we were allowed to take pictures and ask questions.

Who can go on backstage tours?

Indeed, going backstage is a privilege, but anyone ages 4 and up can go on this particular tour. You’ll climb stairs onto the bus, but the platform is wheelchair accessible on this journey so keep that in mind. The cost is $35 per adult and there are discounts for passholders and DVC members. All the proceeds go to Disney’s Conservation Fund, so it’s nice knowing you’re helping the animals too.

What do you learn on Caring for Giants?

Obviously, as the name suggests you’ll learn exactly what it takes to care for these large animals. We learned some pretty amazing facts and were reminded of some we already knew too. You’ll learn about the dangers these animals are facing in the wild, and what Disney is doing to help them.

Our Thoughts

Overall, this tour was amazing. We loved our tour guide and learned a ton about African elephants. Erin mentioned never knowing what you’re going to get on the tour since they are live animals, and they can move around in a very large area. Sometimes the elephants are close like in our case, but sometimes they can’t be seen at all. We really enjoyed our time on the tour and would recommend elephant lovers to consider Caring for Giants.
